All-Purpose House Detergent

For years, we’ve been told that we need a different bottle for every room in the house. If you’re buying separate cleaners for your kitchen, bathroom, and glass, you’re probably spending far more than you need to—and exposing yourself to harsher chemicals than necessary. With a smart, modern formula inspired by eco-certified products, you can make one powerful cleaner that does it all: degreases, removes limescale, and keeps surfaces hygienically clean. You can replace almost every bottle under your sink with one professional-grade, “green chemistry” formula.

Even better, once you stock the ingredients, each liter costs a fraction of store-bought products.

The Recipe (1 Liter / 33.8 fl. oz.)

To get the best results, use a kitchen scale for precision. If you prefer volume, I’ve provided the closest imperial equivalents:

  • Distilled Water: 770g (approx. 26 fl. oz.)
  • Lactic Acid (80% Concentration): 60g (approx. 3.5 tbsp) — This is your natural sanitizer and limescale melter.
  • Citric Acid (Anhydrous): 40g (approx. 3 tbsp) — Boosts the decalcifying power.
  • Decyl Glucoside: 100g (approx. 6.5 tbsp) — A high-performance, plant-based grease cutter.
  • Vegetable Glycerin: 20g (approx. 1.5 tbsp) — Helps the cleaner “wet” the surface for a streak-free finish.
  • Geogard 221 (EU) or Germaben (US): 8g (approx. 1.5 tsp) — Preservative, ensures your batch stays fresh for months.
  • Essential Oils (Thyme & Tea Tree): 2g (approx. 40-50 drops) — For a natural, super antimicrobial boost!

If you’re a US customer, use the amazon table, if you’re from the EU, click on the ingredient from the ingredients list. I selected the highest quality products for both US and EU 🙂

MANY of these ingredents are used to prepare other products like dish soap, face cleanser and so on. Browse this website and discover more! You’ll be amazed by how a little initial investment in bulk raw material can save you a lot of money and a lot of plastic waste, while at the same time allow you to replace the majority of common house and body care products with healthy, valid solutions!

Step-by-Step Preparation

SAFETY FIRST! Always protect your hands and eyes with gloves and protective glasses, when handling chemicals. Thank you 🙂

  1. The Acid Base: Pour the distilled water into a large glass bowl. Stir in the Citric Acid until the water is clear, then carefully add the Lactic Acid. (Lactic acid is concentrated, so handle with care!)
  2. The Degreaser: Slowly pour in the Decyl Glucoside. This sugar-derived surfactant is what lifts the oil and grime. Stir gently; you want to blend it, not create a bubble bath.
  3. Stability & Shine: Add the Vegetable Glycerin and the Geogard 221. These ensure the product is shelf-stable and leaves a professional shine on your fixtures.
  4. Scent & Sanitize: Stir in your essential oils. Thyme is particularly excellent for bathrooms because of its natural disinfecting properties.
  5. Bottle It: Transfer the liquid into a high-quality spray bottle. Label it clearly as your “Multi-Surface Acid Cleaner.”

One Bottle, Three Essential Uses

  • In the Kitchen: This is a superior degreaser. It cuts through the sticky, polymerized oil on stovetops and range hoods. It’s also food-safe (once wiped dry) and sanitizes countertops where you’ve handled raw food.
  • In the Bathroom: Lactic and Citric acids are the ultimate enemies of soap scum and hard water deposits. Spray it on your shower glass, faucets, and tiles, let it sit for two minutes, and watch the limescale melt away.
  • As a Glass & Chrome Cleaner: Because we’ve used vegetable glycerin and high-quality surfactants, this formula leaves windows and mirrors streak-free and chrome fixtures with a mirror-like “industrial” polish.

Why You Should Invest in These Ingredients

1. Drastic Financial Savings The initial purchase of these raw ingredients might cost more than one bottle of “Eco-Spray,” but the math is undeniable. A 1kg bottle of Lactic Acid can make over 16 liters of cleaner. While commercial “natural” sprays retail for $7.00 – $10.00 per bottle, this DIY version costs you roughly $1.15 per Liter. Over a year, you are looking at hundreds of dollars staying in your pocket.

2. Superior Health and Safety Most commercial cleaners use synthetic fragrances and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that linger in the air. This formula is non-volatile and uses biodegradable acids. It’s safer for your lungs, your skin, and is completely safe for homes with pets and children.

3. Professional Performance This isn’t just “vinegar in a bottle.” This is actual green chemistry. By combining a sugar-based surfactant with dual organic acids, you are using the same technology found in high-end industrial eco-cleaners. You get the cleaning power of a professional without the toxic footprint.

A Note on Safety

Because this is an acidic cleaner, it is highly effective on most surfaces but should not be used on natural stone like marble, granite, or limestone. For everything else—from the kitchen sink to the shower door—this is the last cleaner you will ever need to make.
